Copywriting Tips for People Who Don't Think They Can Write
Many business owners freeze at the thought of writing their own marketing copy. The good news: effective copywriting isn't about fancy writing. It's about clear thinking and understanding your customer. Follow a few principles and your words will do their job, no talent required.
Write to one person. Imagine a single ideal customer and write as if you're speaking directly to them. "You" is the most powerful word in copy. It turns broadcasting into a conversation.
Lead with benefits, not features. People don't care what your product is; they care what it does for them. For every feature, ask "so what?" until you reach the real benefit, and lead with that.
Be clear before clever. Clever wordplay that confuses loses customers. Plain, specific language that a busy, distracted person understands instantly always wins. If in doubt, simplify.
Use your customer's own words. The language customers use to describe their problem, drawn from reviews, feedback and conversations, resonates far more than corporate phrasing, because it sounds like them.
Keep it short and skimmable. Short sentences. Short paragraphs. One idea at a time. Respect that people skim.
Always include a clear next step. Tell the reader exactly what to do and what happens when they do.
And edit ruthlessly. Write freely first, then cut every word that isn't earning its place. Good copy is usually short copy that's been trimmed.
Clarity, empathy and a clear ask beat literary flair every time.
