The Marketing Metrics That Actually Matter (and the Ones That Don't)
It's easy to drown in marketing data and still have no idea if your marketing is working. The problem is that the most visible metrics, likes, followers, impressions, are often the least meaningful. Focusing on them feels productive while telling you little about revenue.
Let's separate the signal from the noise.
Vanity metrics look impressive but don't connect to business outcomes. A post with lots of likes that drives no traffic, enquiries or sales is entertainment, not marketing. Follower count matters far less than what those followers do.
The metrics that actually matter tie to money and customers. Cost per lead tells you how efficiently you're generating interest. Conversion rate, at each step, shows where you're winning and leaking. Customer acquisition cost, compared to what a customer is worth over their lifetime, tells you whether your marketing is profitable. Return on ad spend makes paid channels accountable. And revenue attributed to each channel shows where to invest more.
The practical approach is to work backward from revenue. Start with the outcome you care about, then track the handful of metrics that lead to it, and ignore the rest. A simple dashboard with five meaningful numbers beats a report with fifty.
Also track leading indicators you can act on quickly, response times, enquiry volume, so you can course-correct before the revenue numbers even move.
Measure what moves the business, and let the vanity numbers be a nice-to-have, not the goal.
Try it in your own business first. And if you want it done for you, Highnova is a bespoke agency, we take on few clients on purpose, so we can run this personally rather than at arm's length.
