Retargeting Basics: How to Bring Back the 97% Who Don't Buy First Time

The vast majority of people who visit your website or view your product don't buy on that first visit. That's normal, not failure. They get distracted, they're comparing, they're not quite ready. Retargeting is how you gently stay in front of those warm prospects until the timing is right.

The concept is simple: show relevant ads specifically to people who've already interacted with you, visited your site, watched a video, engaged with a post. These people already know you, so retargeting is usually far cheaper and more effective than advertising to strangers.

To make it work, a few basics matter.

First, set up tracking properly. The pixel or tag on your site is what lets platforms build audiences of your visitors. Without it, you're starting from scratch. Get this in place even before you're ready to run ads, so you're building the audience now.

Second, segment by intent. Someone who viewed your pricing page is warmer than someone who read one blog post. Show different, more direct messages to warmer audiences.

Third, give a reason to return, not just a reminder. A helpful nudge, a piece of proof, a limited offer, or an answer to a likely objection works better than simply reappearing.

Fourth, cap the frequency. Following people around the internet too aggressively feels creepy and burns goodwill. Enough to stay present, not enough to annoy.

Retargeting quietly recovers sales you'd otherwise lose, from people who were already interested.

None of this needs an agency to work. But if you'd rather have it built and run for you, that's exactly what we do at Highnova, a bespoke agency that personally handles a small number of clients at a time.
